Founded in 1969, CTI is a leading manufacturer of mechanical carbon and graphite products for aerospace, automotive, chemical, medical and other industries.  It was world headquarters for the MAMAT group of carbon companies from its acquisition by Morgan Crucible in 1992 until 1998, when group corporate management was vested in the Pennsylvania site of Pure Carbon Company.
Application Engineer (1998 – present)
• In Exeter location, part of corporate Sales and Marketing organization.
• Advise customers in application of carbon materials to their needs.
• Design help and failure analysis.
Technology & Application Manager  (1995 – 1998)
• Establish manufacturing process specifications for materials and parts.
• Develop and help market new carbon material grades for special applications, including high temperature, extreme chemical and others.
• Serve on MAMAT’s Global Technology Team;  direct CTI role in team projects.
• Involved with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) in developing standard test methods.
• Advise customers in application of carbon materials to their needs.
• Design help and failure analysis.
Quality Assurance Manager  (1970 – 1995)
• Established and managed CTI quality program.
• Improved performance with such practices as Vendor Certification, Design Review, Statistical Process Control, Quality Cost Analysis, Zero Defects, Quality Circles, ISO 9002.
• Outstanding record with customers; returns for quality less 0.5% of sales.
Other responsibilities:
• Tooling and Equipment Design (CTI is a world leader in press-to-size technology).
• Manufacturing Process Engineering.
• A team player on the General Manager’s staff;  work in close cooperation with other managers: Sales, Finance, Engineering, Production Control, and Manufacturing; and with colleagues in other MAMAT divisions.

Machinist: Set up and operated automatic boring equipment for this now defunct manufacturer of textile machinery.  Productive pace-setter for department.
Military Experience:
1965 – 1969 UNITED STATES NAVY
Naval Aviator.  Aircraft Commander with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Eleven (HS-11) at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.  Sea duty aboard carrier USS Wasp (CVS-16) in North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.  Duties included Navigation Officer, Classified Material Control, and Assistant to the Squadron Administrative Officer.  Released from active duty October 1969 with rank of Lieutenant (O-3).
Education:
1985 – 1986 Quality Engineering Refresher and Design of Experiments courses presented by the Rhode Island section ASQC.
1982 – 1983 University of Rhode Island
Certification program in Quality Control Management and Engineering (in cooperation with the Rhode Island section ASQC).  Courses in Introductory Statistical Quality Control, Advanced Statistical Analysis, and Quality Administration.
1960 – 1964 Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
B.S., Physics and Chemistry.  Ranked in upper quarter of graduating class.  Elective courses included Business, English Literature, and History.  Studied at post-graduate level in Biochemistry and Information Science.
Early Background: Grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Attended the Baylor School;  graduated 1960 in upper sixth of class.  Highest scholastic honors, National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. Sports included tennis, wrestling, and track.
Outside Activities: Participated in founding West Bay (R.I.) Christian School Association and served from 1980 to 1984 as chairman of its board.  Served local church as chairman of trustees.  Interests include D.I.Y. home and auto repair, history, and music.
